Respite from Caregiving
Caring for a family member with autism can lead to caregiver burnout. Adult day services such as Odyssey can help relieve some of the stress, anxiety or exhaustion associated with caregiving. Not only will you get a break from looking after your autistic adult, but you will have predictable hours when you can work, attend to personal needs or run errands. Additionally, if your loved one enjoys the adult day program, they may feel happier overall, making it easier for you to provide care when they are home.
Remedy for Boredom
One of the main benefits of an adult life center like Odyssey is that it will allows our clients to participate in stimulating activities and stretch their wings, or simply maintain contact with others. The brain needs stimulation, and outside programs offer other options for family and caregivers.
An Antidote to Loneliness
Another reason that OLC might bring a smile to your loved one’s face is the opportunity to interact with others. Autistic clients who seldom see anyone outside of their own family often feel loneliness, a condition associated with depression. In addition, studies show that social isolation can be harmful and leads to decreased resistance to infection, increased emergency admission and high mortality risk.
Maintain a Routine
Once an autistic adult has transitioned out of school, it it’s easy to fall into a rut, losing precious daily skills, communication with others, socialization in the community, and a loss of purpose. Odyssey’s adult day program can offer clients a new routine, giving your loved one a reason to get up, get dressed and get moving!
